Synopsis

In the deserted gold-mining town of Waterhole, Barton County, Arizona, a federal road surveyor named Bob Craig and his assistant are shot down by outlaws Flint and Waco. Later, in Phoenix, Marshal Davis, who often goes undercover as outlaw "The Cheyenne Kid," is appointed to investigate the surveyors' disappearances, which are the latest in a series of mysterious disappearances. Cheyenne will be aided by federal agent Fuzzy Jones, who will be posing as a "desert rat" prospecting for gold in Waterhole. As his first task, Fuzzy gets himself thrown out of Waterhole by Flint and Waco so that he can later identify them. In nearby Barton City, Flint and Waco's boss, attorney Vance Sharpe, receives a letter from Easterner Rodney Trent, who has inherited a piece of Waterhole land, declining Sharpe's cheap offer to buy his property. Sharpe, who has located a new vein of gold ore, placed an ad in various Eastern newspapers, searching for Waterhole heirs in an effort to buy up their land. Trent, suspicious of Sharpe's offer, arrives in Waterhole to investigate and is shot by Flint and Waco, who then steal his deed. Cheyenne and Fuzzy rescue Trent and place him in Fuzzy's hideout shack, where he tells them that his death would not help Sharpe because he still has an heir--his daughter Diane--who is due to arrive in Barton City. When Diane arrives, Cheyenne and Fuzzy rescue her and tell her that her father is dead. After Diane agrees to act as bait against Sharpe, Cheyenne tells Sharpe that Trent is dead and asks him to draw up Diane's will naming The Cheyenne Kid as beneficiary. After one of Sharpe's gang finds Trent, however, Sharpe tells Diane that Cheyenne is an outlaw who is after her land, and she believes him. To prove Cheyenne's duplicity, Sharpe brings Diane to see her father, who has just expired in the hideout. Until Cheyenne explains the situation, Diane holds him responsible for her father's death. Next, Fuzzy and Cheyenne locate letters from other Waterhole heirs and intercept one heir, Luther Johnson, before Flint and Waco can get to him. After Fuzzy and Cheyenne fake a shootout, Luther plays dead while Flint and Waco steal his land title. The outlaws then carry Luther's body to a deserted saloon. When Luther gets up, Cheyenne and Fuzzy start a fight and overtake the gang. Cheyenne then discovers the bodies of the other victims in the saloon cellar. Cheyenne is now able to arrest Sharpe and his vandals. Later, at the office of crooked assayer Jonas Watson, Fuzzy locates a hidden drawer containing the deeds that Watson forged. When Watson accuses Sharpe, Sharpe shoots Watson and escapes. Cheyenne pursues Sharpe and beats him in a fistfight before apprehending him. Later, Diane thanks Cheyenne for his trouble, and he leaves town.
