Synopsis

When taxi driver Jack Kirkland is forced to drive two escaping bank robbers, all three are captured by police and placed in a lineup, where private investigator Jay Malone mistakes Jack for John Prescott, the missing heir of a millionaire who recently passed away. The real John Prescott sees a newspaper ad placed by Malone and telephones him from an automobile camp a hundred miles out of town. They plan to meet the next day, but before then John is killed in a fight with Don Clayton and Fay Prescott, Don's hardened blonde accomplice whom John unfortunately married. When Malone is called, he decides not to identify the body, but instead posts bail for Jack and forces him to pose as John by threatening to name him as an accomplice in the bank robbery. Jack, posing as John, for whom he is a perfect double, is sent by Malone to the home of John's stepmother, who has not seen John in several years. There Jack meets Diane Prescott, Mrs. Prescott's daughter by a previous marriage, and they fall in love; however, one day Fay shows up and proclaims that she is Jack's wife. With Don accompanying her, Fay demands $100,000 for a divorce, and Jack, ashamed of the deception he has been party to and in love with Diane, decides to risk telling her the truth. In the meantime, Malone, who was planning a similar scheme in order to get John's inheritance, threatens to turn the blackmailing Fay and Don over to the police, and he is subsequently stabbed to death in a fight with Don. Fay and Don then abduct Jack and force him to withdraw $100,000 from the bank; however, as they leave, Jack drives the getaway vehicle too fast, and when he is pulled over for speeding by a policeman, he informs him of the situation. Don drives away, but Jack leaps onto the running board, and a wild ride ensues. Jack and Don struggle in the car until it finally falls over an embankment, and although Jack is unharmed, Don and Fay are killed in the wreck. Diane, having followed the chase in her roadster, arrives at the accident, and realizing how close Jack was to death, she forgives his earlier deception.
