Synopsis
Frederick Willoughby, who has been framed for embezzlement by his employer, Edward Martin of the Western Packing Company, agrees to testify on behalf of the independent ranchers whom Martin is driving out of business. To prevent Willoughby from testifying, Martin schemes to kidnap his son Ronnie, a school boy living in London, and cables the boy to come to visit his father at "Rancho San Quentin." After arriving by boat, Ronnie mistakes Gene and Frog, itinerant ranch hands, for the cowboys supposedly sent by his father and climbs into their car, where he falls asleep. Unaware of their stowaway, Gene and Frog are already on the road to California when they discover their passenger. After hearing Ronnie's story of his father's vast "spread," Gene decides to retain custody of the boy until he can investigate. While driving along the road, the threesome almost collide with Joyce Halloway and her little sister Patsy, who are fleeing from Joyce's prospective bridegroom. Patsy and Joyce hide in Gene's horse trailer, and after several squabbles, Gene finally agrees to drive them to their ranch in California. Soon after, Martin's thugs, who have been following Ronnie, attempt to kidnap the boy. Later Joyce offers Ronnie refuge at her ranch, which she pretends is Rancho San Quentin. Meanwhile, Willoughby, concerned about his son, breaks out of jail, and Martin sends his men to join the posse in pursuit of the fugitive. Arriving at the ranch, Martin learns that Ronnie is safe and surrenders to the sheriff, but when Martin's men attempt to hijack the train carrying the fugitive back to prison, Gene rides to the rescue. Exonerated by Gene's testimony, Willoughby returns to claim his son, and Gene agrees to stay at the ranch as Joyce's foreman.
