Synopsis

Young Carvel Emerson, Raymond, and Tooker, in order to carry on their stock market operations, "borrow" $5 million from their own firm on unsecured notes. When they learn that their activities are to be exposed by a government inspector, it is arranged that the sole responsibility be assumed by Carvel. At Emerson, Sr.'s, birthday party, Carvel learns that Catherine, his former sweetheart, has married his college friend James Darwin. When the original notes are discovered to have been replaced by forgeries, Carvel forces Cowper to admit having given them to Darwin, a prosecutor for the attorney general. Carvel goes to Darwin's apartment to retrieve the notes and is discovered there with Catherine; and inflamed by jealousy, Darwin orders his arrest. Catherine threatens to testify that Carvel has been her lover and thus ruin her husband's political career; Darwin dismisses the case and tells her to do as she pleases. Catherine, offered her freedom, returns to her husband.
