Synopsis
Deep in the South American jungle lies the village of Malango, the refuge of a motley assortment of criminals. The village's self-appointed leader is the cruel Taggart, who dispenses an extreme brand of justice. The weekly river steamer brings Arthur Leesom and his sister Joan, who are prevented from going further into the jungle in search of a lost city by Arthur's fever. The ill man and his sister take up residence in the hut of "Lucky" Allen, a misogynistic ex-Marine and escaped convict. Taggart and Frenchy, a murderer, want Joan for themselves, so they drug the village's only doctor, Parrish, with alcohol, and Arthur dies from lack of medical attention. Lucky decides to protect Joan from the others' lecherous advances by taking her away. First he must obtain money to leave, and so he goes into the jungle to collect enough pelts to pay their way. While Lucky is gone, Taggart and Frenchy stage a duel to determine who will possess Joan, and Frenchy is killed. Upon Lucky's return, Taggart tries to get him out of the way by framing him with a stolen wallet. His scheme goes awry, however, when Parrish, determined to protect Lucky, confesses to stealing the wallet, even though the confession will result in his death. Lucky tries to prevent the sacrifice, but Parrish is adamant, for he knows that Lucky and Joan are falling love and must be permitted to escape. Parrish is then tossed to the crocodiles. Taggart's desire for Joan is again thwarted by Chita, a native woman whom Taggart had discarded when Joan arrived. Chita jealously reveals that Taggart engineered Arthur and Parrish's deaths, and the incensed villagers sentence him to share Parrish's fate. Lucky and Joan then escape from the village and are married.

According to news items in Hollywood Reporter, S. K. Lauren was to collaborate on the screenplay with writer Ethel Hill; however, his contribution to the final film has not been determined. Hollywood Reporter news items also note that production began in early July 1933 with Donald Cook and Helen Twelvetrees in the lead roles, however, Cook traded places with Victor Jory, who was filming My Woman (see below) at the time. Both Jory and Twelvetrees were then taken out of the cast in late July to fulfill the lead roles in My Woman (see below). Twelvetrees then returned to the lead role in Fury of the Jungle in early Sep, and the studio hoped to retain some of the original footage. Not long after, Twelvetrees again left the cast, and Peggy Shannon replaced her as "Joan," while Donald Cook replaced Victor Jory as "Lucky."
