Synopsis

Perry, a young comedian who performs with a group of San Francisco-based satirists called The Committee, is so dissatisfied with both his career and his private life that he breaks off with the troupe and ends his longstanding affair with another Committee member, Jan. Anxious to try his luck at a more ambitious profession, Perry is persuaded by his agent to work with Vogel, an offbeat gin-swilling animator, in developing insecticide commercials for a local ad agency. At first uninspired, Perry finally comes up with the slogan " Blast kills everything that bugs you!" and so impresses the agency's secretary that she takes him to bed. Although Perry's commercials are highly regarded, they are ultimately rejected for being too unconventional. Once again at loose ends, Perry persuades The Committee to allow him to stage an experimental one-man show for which he dreams up wild sight gags, ingenious props, and unconventional music. When the performance is only moderately successful, however, Perry is so depressed that he goes off on a vacation to a serene fishing village. There, while immersing himself in the idyllic way of life, Perry meets a Japanese-American artist and his family and, through them, Sue, a model who makes some thoughtful suggestions about his self-questioning. Returning to San Francisco with Sue, Perry vows to dedicate himself to intellectual pursuits. But when Sue accidentally hears a tape of one of his comic monologues and responds with unabashed delight, she tells him that he was best as a funnyman. Somewhat reluctantly, but with a decided sense of relief, Perry comes to the same conclusion.

Notes

The satirical group called The Committee was an actual comedy troupe which actor Alan Myerson and his wife Jessica formed in 1963. The group's shows ran for ten years in San Francisco, including several years in which it simultaneously ran in Los Angeles. In addition to Alan Myerson, several cast members in Funnyman were part of The Committee, including lead actor Peter Bonerz, Roger Bowen and Richard Stahl (1932-2006), who made his motion picture debut in the film. Roger Bowen was the husband of Anne Bowen, who also acted in the film. Funnyman was shot on location in San Francisco.
