Synopsis
On a trail near Mint City, roving cowboys Allan "Rocky" Lane and his brother Kenny are suddenly shot at by a sniper hiding in some trees. After his brother dies, Rocky tries to follow the sniper, but finds only the telescopic gun sight he left behind. Later, a gang of bandits chases a stagecoach driven by Nugget Clark, owner and operator of the Square Nugget Stage line. In town, Rocky accepts a job driving for Nugget's stage line. Just then, Scott, the son of Ed Garnett, a rival stage line owner, enters and asks to speak with Nugget's employee, Janet Adams. After Scott leaves, Rocky is approached by the town blacksmith, Flint Fleming, who warns him to stay away from the Square Nugget. That evening, crooked optician Erskine Doubleday meets with Flint, who is the leader of the outlaws and Erskine's henchman. Erskine, who recognizes that Flint feels no loyalty toward him, tells him that he has just mailed a letter revealing Flint's illegal activities, with instructions that it be opened in the event of his untimely death. Later, Flint asks for a new gun sight to replace the one he lost and requests information about Ed's stage line so that he and his gang can prepare an ambush. When Ed leaves on the next stage, Flint and his gang attack it, killing the guard. As they push the stage off a steep cliff, smashing it to pieces, the gang remarks loudly that Nugget has paid them to do so. Later, in town, Ed tries to force Nugget to sign a statement confessing that he is responsible for the murder of the guard, but he refuses. Soon, the stage lines begin preparing for the traditional race which will determine which line is awarded the lucrative mail contract. Aware that Ed is in need of money to pay the mortgage on his stage line, Erskine offers him some money to throw the race. Later, Flint sends Ed a telegram signed "Rocky," asking that they meet nearby. After he sends the same message to Rocky, signed "E. Garnett," Flint goes to the spot and hides. When Ed arrives, Flint shoots him and then kidnaps him. Later, Rocky finds the wounded Ed and tells him that the money Erskine "loaned" him was stolen from his own stage during the attack. Because the payment was not made on time, ownership of his stage will be transferred to Erskine. As the day of the race approaches, Nugget offers half ownership of his stage line to Rocky if he can win the race driving one of Nugget's stages. Rocky agrees, but just as the race is about to start, Nugget notices a gun aimed at Rocky's head and shouts for him to duck. Despite the attack, Rocky wins the race, then learns that Flint was responsible for his brother's murder and kills him. Before he leaves town, Rocky decides to give his half of the stage line to Ed, urging the two rivals to put aside their differences.
