Synopsis

Insurance company owner Big Jim Crail covertly runs a gang of outlaws who terrorize the merchants of Bold Bluff into purchasing his protection. Only Nugget Clark, owner of the Stage and Freight line, resists the intimidation, as he suspects Crail's underhanded involvement. As a consequence of Nugget's refusal to buy the insurance, his stages are constantly robbed and his drivers and guards attacked and killed. With no regular lawman in town, Nugget sends for U.S. Marshal Allan "Rocky" Lane, although he inadvertently tips off Crail to Rocky's arrival. Crail arranges for his henchman, Mike Bristol, to ambush Rocky on his way to Bold Bluff. The lawman escapes the attack, but his identity papers are stolen and placed in Crail's hands. An idealistic young lawyer, Paul Weston, works for Crail and is in love with Crail's secretary, Jean Martin. Because she knows that Paul trusts Crail, Jean, who has doubts about her boss, hesitates about her involvement with Paul and offers help to Rocky and Nugget. When Crail realizes Rocky has quickly made the connection between the insurance and the gang attacks, he decides to use Paul's trust to get rid of the marshal. Using Rocky's identity papers, Crail convinces Paul that Rocky is an impostor who has killed the real marshal. Despite Paul's well-meaning interference in helping Crail and his gang, Rocky goes ahead with plans to expose Crail's connection with the outlaw's activities. Crail again attempts to stop Rocky by having his men kidnap him, but Jean helps Rocky escape. The marshal and Nugget then set a trap to lure Crail into the open by arranging a large money shipment to come through the Stage and Freight line and set up a waiting posse to stop the inevitable holdup by Crail's gang. They know the size of the shipment will assure Crail's personal participation in the robbery. When Jean wires information about the plan to the town that is shipping the gold, Paul overhears and tells Crail. Later, Paul realizes that Crail is crooked and joins the posse attack, which ends with a shoot-out and Crail's arrest. Afterward Paul is made the sheriff and Rocky departs the now-peaceful Bold Bluff.
