Synopsis
Civil engineer David Bruce works frantically to stop the possible flooding of the Mississippi River into the town of Riverside. Meanwhile, Joan Marshall, the daughter of Colonel Marshall, has been taken to a seedy hotel by Randolph Bannister under the false pretense of elopement. Joan discovers the truth and escapes the hotel with her virtue, only to be trapped in the flood when the damaged levee breaks. She is rescued by David at the last minute. Joan is forced to leave Riverside due to her falsely soiled reputation, and moves to a nearby town where she once again meets David. Joan is hired as a secretary by David's father, and she and David soon fall in love and marry. Shortly after their honeymoon, David is sent back to Riverside to work on the levee. Joan is worried about returning to her home town, but her family, impressed whith the fact that she has married a multi-millionaire, greets her with open arms. Her happiness is short-lived, however, as Randolph also returns to Riverside and turns out to be an old friend of David's. Randolph continues to pester Joan, and rumors of their past romance make their way to David's ears. Randolph convinces Joan to come to his apartment one night, once again under false pretenses. David learns of their meeting, but he is unable to confront them himself as the flood waters once again threaten the city of Riverside. Colonel Marshall, aware of his daughter's plight, arms himself and goes to rescue her. The levee breaks once again, flooding the city. After the flood, Randolph's dead body is found on a muddy road. David finds Joan and her father precariously clinging to some wreckage. When the Colonel tells his son-in-law the truth about Randolph's relationship with Joan, David recognizes his wife's innocence, embraces her, and declares that they will never be separated again.
