Synopsis
Marshal Cheyenne Davis and his partner, Fuzzy Q. Jones, rescue a young woman named Abby Jackson from an ambush by a trio of thieves led by Check, so-called because he wears a checkered shirt. Cheyenne makes a citizen's arrest to hide his identity and takes the men to the sheriff, who is secretly in partnership with Price Taylor, who runs the town's only trading post. Taylor has been unable to bring his regular shipments into town because of an elusive band of vigilantes, who publish an underground leaflet called "The Vigilante." Impressed with Cheyenne's marksmanship, Taylor hires him to guard his wagon while Fuzzy drives. On his first trip, Fuzzy is ambushed by the vigilantes, who abscond with Taylor's supplies, but leave Fuzzy unharmed. The gang's leader, Frank Jackson, who is Abby's father, makes the rounds delivering goods to poor shut-ins in the area. Unaware of the altruistic nature of Frank's robbery, Cheyenne arrests him. The sheriff places him in a cell with Check and his men, then stages a jailbreak in which Check shoots Frank in the back, supposedly in self-defense, and escapes with his men. After a gunfight in the hills, during which the sheriff uses little effort to bring Check and his men in, Cheyenne realizes that the sheriff is in league with Taylor and has murdered Frank in cold blood; Abby, however, blames Cheyenne. He and Fuzzy join the vigilantes and buy food for Ellie and Bert, an elderly couple, who explain that Frank started the vigilantes after Taylor's thugs shot him and tried to run him out of town for starting his own trucking business. Cheyenne apologizes to Abby for his part in her father's death and, by showing her his badge, gets Abby to confess that she prints "The Vigilante." Together, they print an issue exposing Taylor's control of the local law. The sheriff, meanwhile, schemes with Taylor to arrest Cheyenne on a trumped up charge. The sheriff also attempts to arrest Abby for printing libelous material, but Fuzzy tells him that he and Cheyenne now own the printing press. A fight ensues, and while Cheyenne chases Check, Fuzzy forces a gang member, by tickling his foot, to confess Taylor's control of the law. In town, a posse of vigilantes rescues Cheyenne and Fuzzy as they try to arrest Taylor and his gang. After Check surrenders, Taylor shoots him in the back, then approaches Cheyenne for a duel, but is foiled by Cheyenne's whip. Later, Fuzzy pulls down the sign for Taylor's trading post.
