Fighting Texans

At Albert's Exclusive Men's Furnishings in Fort Worth, Texas, Randolph "Randy" Gates works as a sales clerk. Randy prides himself on being able to sell anything to anyone, be it clothing or himself. When Rita Walsh comes in looking for a tie, Randy gets both a commission and a date. When Gus Durkin comes in looking for a gift for his girl back in Burnett, Randy sells him a pen holder for her and a pair of American flag underpants for him. Gus overhears Randy telling how he sold the shorts to some "jerk," however, and a fight breaks out between the two, causing Randy's dismissal. Lunching with Rita, Randy tells of his recent unemployment, so Rita takes him to her boss, Julian Nash, who has just fired Gus as manager of the Burnett office of Nash Petroleum. Nash gives Randy Gus's old job, despite Gus's warning that he is "out, but not through." Before leaving Fort Worth, Randy returns to Albert's and sells his old boss forty shares of oil stock. In Burnett, Randy takes the town by storm. Despite Gus's friends in town and at the oil well, Randy manages to sell stock to just about everyone, including the local men's and women's clubs. Even the sheriff of the town buys some stock, even though his daughter, Joanne Carver, works as Randy's secretary. Joanne seems to be the only person Randy cannot win over, as she continues to date Gus. Rita arrives in town to warn Randy that Nash is on his way to pull the plug on the well and take all the townspeople's investments. Despite Randy's pleas, Nash arrives and takes the $10,000 Randy has raised. As Nash prepares to leave town, the well hits the mother load. Gus is informed of the strike by his men who shoot the foreman. Gus kidnaps Nash and the two make a deal to keep the oil strike a secret for six months, then buy back the stock for six cents on the dollar. While Rita tries to get Randy to leave town with her, the townspeople prepare to take their revenge on him. While her father tries to stop the mob, Joanne walks in to warn Randy, only to see him in Rita's arms. When an unknown assailant tries to shoot Randy, he accidentally hits the sheriff instead, making everyone think Randy shot the sheriff. Randy jumps out of the window and steals a horse. At the oil well, Randy finds the foreman and is told of Gus's treachery. Randy goes to Gus's ranch where the posse finds him. Sneaking into the barn, Randy steals the posse's horses. At another oil well, Randy gets a wagon load of dynamite to shoot the well, which Gus's men have shut off. When Gus's men try and stop him, he fakes a crash. At the oil well, Randy is captured by Gus's men, only to escape and capture them. Back in town, the sheriff recovers and Old Man Martin, the mail driver, admits he shot the sheriff, not Randy. The posse arrives at the well, where Gus tries to convince the mob to hang Randy. Joanne and Martin, however, show up to tell all. Gus tries to escape in a car, which shoots the well, as the car's battery was connected to the dynamite. Back in Fort Worth, Randy is in charge of Nash Petroleum, which has four successful wells. Rita, his new secretary, comes in to inform him that Joanne, the new Mrs. Graves, has arrived for lunch. Randy dictates a letter to Nash in prison, with regards to his cellmate Gus.
