Synopsis

Villainous investor Barton is greedy for land to sell to the railroad and needs only a few more ranches to control a whole valley once filled with independent ranchers. Among those who refuse to sell are the Allens and the Grays, who have been feuding for years. Barton ignites the feud by starting a range war, which each family blames on the other. Bob Gray, who has been disowned by his father for loving Madge Allen, is called home by Sheriff Cal. Winters to stop the war. Soon after he arrives, Bob saves horse breeder Pop Wilson and his daughter Helen from a group of agitators supposedly sent by Harvey Allen, but who really are Barton's men. When the group tries to jump Bob and his friend, Happy, Bob recognizes them as the men who ambushed Pop and has them arrested. One of them, Dirk, escapes and inadvertently leads Bob to Barton's hideout. After Bob and Happy are sworn in as deputies, Bob asks his father to keep his men at home for twenty-four hours, planning to ask Allen to do the same in order to prove that Barton is pitting each family against the other. After Bob and his father quarrel, Allen is shot and killed, and Bob is blamed. The sheriff arrests Bob for appearance's sake and discovers that Barton's men have escaped prison. Barton, meanwhile, unleashes his men on ranchers and nesters, and they burn barns and drive people from their homes. When Bob catches Barton's men again shooting at Pop's property, Bob saves the ranch. After the men trap Bob, Helen runs for help and the sheriff arrives with Gray and his men. Bob then fights Barton, who is revealed as Allen's killer. Madge apologizes to Bob for not believing in him, and he rides off with his father's men, no longer ostracized.
