Synopsis

When Peggy Mallory discovers that her husband Jim is not a legitimate businessman, but is secretly the head of a hijacking ring, she decides to leave him. Because Jim has Peggy drive the getaway car when the police come to arrest his gang, she becomes a fugitive and goes with him to a mountain cabin to hide. As the wounded Jim sleeps, Peggy then slips away, after leaving a note saying that her love for him died when she discovered what he really was. While the police conduct a nation-wide search for Peggy, erroneously concluding that she has been a major part of the hijacking ring's criminal activities, she gets a job as a cook at the mountain retreat of renowned artist Bruce Dunning. After a short time, Bruce and Peggy fall in love, and Bruce breaks his engagement to Claire Bannister. Jim, meanwhile, searches for his wife after killing a man named Mort and disguising the body so that it would appear to be Jim's. When a portrait of Peggy painted by Bruce is reproduced on the cover of a national magazine, Peggy fears that the police and Jim will discover where she has been hiding. She confesses everything to Bruce, who promises to help her. Soon Jim arrives at Bruce's cabin and threatens him, but G-man Roberts arrives just in time to kill Jim before Jim kills Bruce. Because Roberts' pal had been killed by Jim's gang, Roberts wants to arrest Peggy, but when he finds Peggy's note in Jim's pocket, Roberts realizes that Peggy is innocent. Finally, Peggy and Bruce are free to start a new life together.
