Synopsis

Anne Lawrence, a naïve secretary, agrees to marry her sweetheart, Pete Rennick, even though he is serving twenty years in prison for the armed robbery of the office in which they both worked. Anne believes in Rennick's innocence, but her belief is tested when he uses her as a shield and escapes during their wedding ceremony. Anne is questioned by the warden, but after she maintains that she knew nothing about the escape, he lets her go in order to have her followed. Rennick is hiding with Damon Lauber, who orchestrates prison escapes as a tidy supplement to his income as a bus line owner. After murdering his former partner, who hid his loot, Rennick calls Anne and tells her to pick up a package for him. He tells her that it contains evidence that will prove his innocence, but it actually holds the stolen money. Anne gets the package, then follows Rennick's instructions to a garage, from which operates an illegal wildcat bus line. She boards the car bound for San Diego with several other passengers, including Mrs. Ganter and her baby, Mrs. Banning and her young ward Scoop, and Bill Hasford, a private detective hired by Bus Owners Association president Hinkley to investigate the wildcat operation. Meanwhile, Rennick is slipped out of town by his friend, Snuffy Deagan, but the police spot him and send out an APB. Goldie, the driver of the car that Anne, Bill and the others are in, picks up Rennick, who poses as a hitchhiker. In the meantime, Bill has had his partner, Joe Hawlings, trace Goldie's phone call to Lauber and, he is now trying to figure out how Lauber is involved. That night, Anne sees the money in the package and realizes that Rennick has been using her all along. He warns her that she has to cooperate or else she will be charged as an accessory if he is caught. Bill recognizes Rennick and alerts Joe, who notifies the FBI. Back on the road, the band of travelers hears a new APB on Rennick that identifies their car. They go to Lauber's country home, where they intend to hide until they can make it to the airport. Bill, whose private detective badge can get the criminals through the police roadblocks, refuses to help them until a doctor is called for Mrs. Ganter's sick baby. When the doctor arrives, Scoop slips him a note alerting him to the situation and the doctor writes a prescription that, in Latin, tells the pharmacist to call the police. The pharmacist summons the police, who chase the criminals as Bill is forced to drive them to the airport. Bill succeeds in stopping Lauber's plane before it takes off, and the gang is apprended. Bill is hospitalized for measles, which he caught from the baby, and a grateful Anne, now freed from Rennick, visits him.
