Synopsis

Takó is a young Hungarian boy whose father died at the end of World War II. So great is the child's tragedy that he conjures up a fantasy father who still guides him. In his own imagination, Takó becomes the son of a hero, a brave partisan who gained glory in the war. Sustained by the myth he has created, Takó establishes himself as a leader among his friends and succeeds in breaking up the courtship between his mother and a would-be suitor. When he becomes a man, Takó finds that he is able to captivate young women with stories of his father's heroism. In 1956 Takó becomes involved in the Hungarian uprising and discovers that he now has less need of his father. At this time Takó also acquires a girl friend, Anni, who is Jewish. While working together as extras at a film studio, they reenact the horror of the persecution of the Jews, and Takó experiences vicariously the pain of Anni's heritage. After resolving to learn about his own background, Takó discovers that his father was a quite ordinary man, neither hero nor partisan, but a decent, hardworking individual. Takó now understands that he must live without the myth of his father, that a man can achieve dignity only through his own strength.
