Synopsis
Rose Pierce is discontent with her life as the wife of a small town plumber and has visions of becoming a wealthy socialite. Consequently, when her smart aleck son Sammy hears that an electric railroad line is to be built through town, she decides that the family can become rich by purchasing the lots along the right of way. Patriarch George Pierce laughs at the idea, but when Rose and Sammy learn that Cora Stewart, the wealthy town widow, has withdrawn her savings from the bank, they jump to the conclusion that she is interested in buying the lots, and mother and son secretly invest the family bank roll in the land. Anticipating great wealth, Rose throws an elaborate party so that her daughter Laura can snag Cora Stewart's nephew, Bill Tevis. After renting expensive furniture and hiring a maid, Rose sees her plans evaporate when her younger son Rufus and his rufian friends fall through the ceiling onto Mrs. Stewart, her fancy friends and the rented furniture. More disaster follows when quicksand is found on the Pierce property and the land is declared worthless. Just when the family seems in danger of losing its life's savings, Dr. Hall, a young scientist at the local university, declares that the land is worth a fortune because of valuable silicates in the soil needed in the manufacture of glass. All ends happily for the Pierces as a glass manufacturer shows an interest in buying the property and Dr. Hall shows an interest in Laura.
