Synopsis

Geraldine Wheeler, a wealthy young Englishwoman, is preparing to leave her country estate for a vacation when she is murdered by Lucas, a local taxi driver with whom she has had an affair. Learning of Geraldine's disappearance, her Aunt Helen informs David, Geraldine's brother, and he arrives at the estate with his wife, Carol. The police become suspicious of Lucas, who has begun to spend large sums of money, and also question David, Geraldine's heir. Aunt Helen summons Annie Jones, a 17-year-old girl from a nearby orphanage who is believed to possess extrasensory perception. David is openly skeptical about Annie's ability to locate the missing woman, but he nevertheless responds to her obvious infatuation with him. Lucas, fearing Annie's powers to discover the truth, obtains reassurance from David, who, it is revealed, has been embezzling money from the family mills and hired Lucas to kill Geraldine. Sleepwalking, Annie walks toward the spot where Geraldine's body is buried and is stopped by David just as Lucas is about to murder her. The following day, Annie speaks in a trance in the voice of Geraldine, saying, "I go from place to place. I don't know where. They won't let me rest." Her words make no sense to her listeners, and she is returned to the orphanage. As David and Carol leave, Lucas confronts David and demands the balance of his payment for the murder. The police observe the exchange, and Lucas flees in his car and is fatally injured when it crashes. Before he dies, he confesses his guilt and implicates David. The import of Annie's message is revealed when Geraldine's body, dug up earlier by Lucas, is found in the trunk of the wrecked car.
