Synopsis

In Paris, international spy Steve Harrington and his daughter Johanna have lunch with her fiancé, Dario, a fellow spy. Stephen and Dario plan to steal military secrets from France, but during their attempt Stephen is captured by the police and sentenced to twenty years in the penal colony of Devil's Island in Guyana. Dario eludes the police and, with Johanna, plans to free Stephen. Meanwhile, at Ile-de-Re, the embarkation point for Devil's Island, Stephen becomes friends with fellow prisoner Andre Dion, who has been sentenced unjustly. Johanna establishes a base in Cayenne on the opposite side of the jungle from the prison and Dario enters the prison as a new guard for Commandante de Montresson. Soon Stephen, Dario and Andre are plotting their escape. Python, an informer, overhears them, and they are forced to leave before their preparations are complete. Pursued through the jungle by guards and dogs, Dario and Andre secure passage across the river but when Wong, the smuggler, demands more money, Dario smashes his boat, and Wong puts the guards on their trail. Dario and Andre separate, and the dogs follow Dario's trail. Andre arrives at Cayenne before Dario and while Andre and Johanna wait for him, the two fall in love. Andre refuses to betray his friend, however, and pretends that he does not return Johanna's feelings. Six weeks later, Dario finally joins them and they leave for Venezuela. On board the ship, Dario learns that Andre has been declared innocent and rushes to tell him the good news. He finds Johanna and Andre embracing and, in a rage, rows Andre to the jungle shore and abandons him. Upon his return to the ship, Johanna explains that she loves Andre even though he rejected her advances. Risking his own freedom, a contrite Dario returns to shore to save Andre, who has been found and pardoned in the meantime. Shortly thereafter, Andre and Johanna say farewell to Dario, who promises to join them in Paris after his release from prison.
