Synopsis

Within a seacoast area live a group of disillusioned New Leftists in their late twenties and early thirties who were once active in civil rights, poverty, and anti-war causes, but now feel themselves drawn more and more into personal introspection. The FBI has accumulated dossiers on all of them, and they are prone to feelings of suspicion. Into this community for a brief visit comes Tom Eliot, 25 years old and filled with radical enthusiasm. Although he is a close friend of most of the members of the group, they keep from him a common secret: Dan Rainer, one of their number, plans to assassinate the President and then, because he feels justice demands "a life for a life," to commit suicide. While members of the group see Dan's plan as a senseless act and he himself recognizes its futility, it appeals to their frustration and sense of impotence. Bill Raskin, who has served a prison sentence for draft evasion, cautions against the horrors of prison. Peter Stein, once a painter but now a factory worker, becomes estranged from his wife, Didi, as a result of his inability to cope with Dan's plan; and eventually she leaves him. Sinclair Davis, who runs a nursery school, feels himself a member of an earlier generation and is unable to communicate with the younger Dan. Dan at last bids farewell to his waitress girl friend, Sally Kolka, and, carrying a gun, boards a train for Washington. His assassination attempt is foiled, however, and he is trapped by Secret Service agents. Rather than allow himself to be taken alive, he turns the gun against himself. Later, Dan's friends speculate that perhaps he was betrayed, and hospital worker Max Laing accuses ceramist Michael Warren of being an informer. Following a brief scuffle, Tom, realizing that he alone retains faith in the future, goes to Washington to retrieve Dan's body before moving to Chicago to organize student draft resistance.
