Synopsis

Martin Casals is an enthusiastic young member of a fascist organization in Buenos Aires whose major activity consists of smearing the city's political statues with tar. When the group's activities are officially supressed, Martin's uncle suggests that he hide out in an old hotel inhabited by Spanish exiles and theatrical people. To ease his loneliness, Martin persuades Inés, a childhood friend, to move in with him. In the isolation of his room, Martin overhears a troupe of Spaniards rehearsing next door and begins imagining that they are planning political activities which include the assassination of a visiting dictator whom Martin admires. When Martin sees Ramallo, the leader of the troupe, talking to some suspicious-looking men carrying parcels, his fears seem confirmed, and he persuades a fellow member of his group to report the Spaniards to the police. An investigation reveals nothing but causes the Spaniards' theater to be closed down. Upon discovering that Martin is responsible for their troubles, the actors drive him out of the hotel.
