Synopsis
A young American pilot in wartime England is shattered by the suicide of a friend who was castrated during an air raid. Obsessed by the idea that he may die in battle without having experienced sexual intercourse, the pilot goes AWOL and picks up a prostitute but is unable to respond sexually to her. Later he gets drunk and meets an equally inexperienced young woman who attempts to reassure him, but again he is incapable of response. He tries unsuccessfully to force pursuing MP's to kill him, but a chaplain intercedes and helps him talk out his difficulties. His faith in himself restored, he returns to the young woman, and they consummate their love. The pilot then leaves on his final mission, knowing that the young woman will await his return.
