Synopsis

A mysterious masked outlaw known as "The Shadow" has been looting and killing Durango Valley ranchers for some time. Because of the number of The Shadow's crimes and the fact that his own deputies have been wounded, Sheriff Devlin is powerless to stop him. He hires two new deputies, Slade and Jenks, who are supposed to be trustworthy, but are actually members of The Shadow's gang. They, like the others, work for The Shadow without knowing his real identity. One day, stranger Keene Cordner comes to John McKay's ranch looking for a job as a foreman and is recognized by ranch hand Matt Tanner. Keene is the son of Boone Cordner, an old partner of Mac's with whom he had a serious falling out years before. Matt and Betty, Mac's daughter, befriend Keene and refuse to believe that he is The Shadow when he is arrested by Devlin, and escapes from Slade and Jenks. A short time later, Betty is kidnapped by Lobo, The Shadow's second-in-command, who sends a note to Mac signed "The Shadow." Matt takes Mac to Keene's hideout and Keene reveals the reason why he had to assume the identity of The Shadow: many years before, Mac and Boone had been partners with another man and stole money that had been swindled from them. The third man turned Mac and Boone against each other and convinced Mac that he had killed Boone during a violent argument. That same man is now The Shadow. Mac, Boone, Matt and Keene unite to find Betty and capture the outlaw, who turns out to be Sheriff Devlin. Before he is taken to jail, however, Devlin is killed by Lobo, who realizes that Devlin had planned to kill his entire gang all along. Now partners again, Boone and Mac turn their ranch over to Keene and Betty who decide to get married.
