Synopsis
Artur Bauer, a middle-aged professor and ex-revolutionary leader, hires a left-wing student, Tomas, to serve as his secretary and assemble a scattered collection of papers for publication. Tomas moves into the Bauer household to facilitate his work, even though it means leaving his girl friend Ingrid. He soon becomes perplexed by the strange relationship between Bauer and his eccentric wife, Francesca, and is shocked to learn from a tape recording that the professor is suffering from a fatal disease and that he plans to murder his wife. One evening, Francesca seduces Tomas, at her husband's request. Bauer then persuades Ingrid to move into the house to protect her lover, but upon arriving, the young woman falls under the spell of the couple and enjoys the advances of both. When Tomas discovers Francesca watching Bauer make love to Ingrid, he decides that the situation has gone far enough and leaves the house, promising to return only if Ingrid is released. Bauer agrees to give Ingrid her freedom if Tomas will return to work, but Ingrid's first move upon returning to the old apartment is to take a new lover. When Tomas goes back to the Bauer household, he finds Francesca lying on the bed, apparently shot to death by the now-remorseful professor. Bauer then apparently commits suicide with the same weapon, whereupon Francesca comes back to life and joins Tomas in burning the papers. Ingrid arrives to effect a reconciliation with Tomas, and as the two young lovers drive away, they see both Bauers watching them from the window.
