Synopsis

After being released from a two-year prison sentence for assaulting her ex-husband, 39 year-old Alexandra returns to her now deceased grandmother's house and try to discover herself again. She avoids all contact with others; the rumors, the gossip, the staring, and suspicious glances. In contrast, Piet searches for companionship nearly to the point of desperation. He works in town as a driving instructor, and he has a young son named Tom. In the provincial East German town in which they live, Piet's twelve year old son sees Alex as a replacement mother. Both adults are left struggling with their past and trying to face their future, causing Alex to take a stand. Alex dares to leave her self-imposed exile and discovers once again just how thin the ice can be and how fragile happiness is.
