Synopsis

A handsome young Buddhist monk, Ananda, arrives at a temple to restore some ancient paintings which depict a particular Buddhist moral: for an ideal life man must not be swayed by the five senses or, especially, women. While restoring the paintings, he notices that he is being watched by a village girl. As she gets ever closer, amorous feelings are awoken in him and his world is plunged into turmoil. Upon completing the restorations, Ananda aims to leave, only to find the next morning that the art works have been desecrated. A woman's hairpin is the only clue. While restoring them for the second time, Ananda realizes that he cannot escape the earthly desires that are welling up in him.
