Synopsis

Peter, a young pianist, returns from Paris to Munich because of the death of his father, The Great Alberto, king of magicians. At the traveling circus, he finds that his mother, Odette, has developed a severe drinking problem and wants him to stay on. He falls in love with Hildegarde, a circus illusionist, and learns that she is one of identical twins who use their resemblance to create their deceptions. (A condition of their contract is that the twins may never be seen together.) Greta, the other twin, falls in love with the pianist and becomes jealous of her sister. Later, Greta is found dead, killed by Odette, and is secretly buried to preserve the illusion that only one woman performed in their act. The pianist begins to believe that Greta isn't really dead, and, after a series of macabre events, he shoots the girl he thinks is Greta only to discover that he has actually killed Hildegarde.
