Synopsis

Adventuress Fay Benton meets gambler Mike Sarno on a cruise ship, where he is working a crooked gambling racket, and joins forces with him. Later, Fay and Sarno meet well-to-do John Randall on a train. Fay and Sarno, who are posing as brother and sister, decide that Randall will be an easy mark and accept his invitation to visit the town where he lives. In the same town, Sarno's brother, Harry Arnold, is in prison on embezzlement charges. Arnold stole the money from his employer, banker Warren Creighton, to pay his debt to gambler Morelli. Sarno visits his brother in jail and persuades him to reveal the hiding place of the stolen funds by pretending that he will use the money to care for Arnold's wife and child. Instead, Sarno uses the funds to take over Morelli's gambling house and at the same time fleece Randall. When he meets Ruth Hamilton, Creighton's niece and an heiress, Sarno decides to marry her for her money. A jealous Fay then exposes Sarno's plans to assistant district attorney Bob Randall, Ruth's fiancé and Randall's son, and discloses how Sarno cheated his father. Before Bob can arrest Sarno, Sarno's body is found shot to death in a car in front of Ruth's house. Police Chief Broderick holds Ruth, whose fingerprints were on the murder weapon, and Bob. Ruth insists that her fingerprints are on the gun because she picked it up after she discovered Sarno's body. Then Fay confesses to the murder. Broderick starts to take her to jail, but in the meantime, the police have learned that Morelli actually committed the murder. Later, Fay is sent to jail for her part in the gambling racket, and Ruth reconciles with Bob.
