Synopsis

In 1910, as Primrose Junction, Kansas, prepares for its annual county fair, traveling saleslady Agatha Knabenshu arrives at the Sunflower Hotel to sell player pianos. When Bertram Webb, the town's unsuccessful young inventor, reduces Agatha's demonstration piano to shambles, he tries to make amends by inviting her to stay at his parents' farm and to repay her by winning $1,000 at the fair with his automatic cow-milking machine. The contraption backfires, however, and sends the cows stampeding through the town, resulting in almost $1,500 in property damages. Meanwhile, the Webbs, bankrupt because of Bertram's inventions, have been informed by banker Hubert Shelton that they have only 24 hours to meet their mortgage. In a desperate attempt to raise the money, Bertram decides to enter his wood-burning automobile in the county fair race, which offers a $1,500 prize. Disguised as racing drivers, Agatha and Bertram pull up to the starting line, but Bertram is discovered; Agatha is not recognized, however, and after a series of wild misadventures, she wins the race.
