Synopsis
Irked by the 1478 peace treaty between Rome and Florence, Beelzebub sends the Archdevil Belfagor and his impish servant, Adramalek, to rekindle the war between the two cities. Once on Earth, Belfagor seduces an innkeeper's wife and then sets out to disrupt the pending political wedding of Franceschetto, the son of Pope Innocent VIII, and Magdalena, the daughter of Lorenzo il Magnifico, the ruling prince of Florence. After inveigling Franceschetto into gambling for his life in a game of tarok, Belfagor easily defeats him and then assumes his identity. With the invisible Adramalek at his side, Belfagor/Franceschetto attends the nuptials but to everyone's amazement announces that he prefers war to marriage to Magdalena. Despite his daughter's humiliation, Lorenzo still advocates peace even though his advisors recommend war. Hoping to disgrace Magdalena further, Belfagor slips into her room, undresses her, leads her to the balcony for all the populace to see, and then, using Leonardo da Vinci's canvas wings, flees with the Florentine guards in pursuit. Engaging the captain of the guard, Belfagor knocks him unconscious but discovers that the captain is actually Magdalena in disguise. His "strange" feeling for her prevents him from killing her, and because of this emotion Beelzebub takes away his devilish powers. Now as vulnerable as any mortal in love, Belfagor is captured and sentenced to burn at the stake. At the last minute, Magdalena throws herself onto the pyre with Belfagor. But Lorenzo stops the execution--and peace is restored when he consents to the marriage of Belfagor/Franceschetto to Magdalena.
