Synopsis
Boyan, a successful engineer, is forced to make a detour to avoid construction on the road to Sofia. He stops near some archeological diggings to ask directions and is surprised to meet Neda, the woman he loved during his university days 17 years before. She rides into town with him, and they recall their first meeting. Boyan is a dynamic post-war revolutionary espousing the importance of the Communist Party over petty romantic entanglements, and Neda wagers with her friends that she can make the disciplined idealist fall in love with her. Although the two share a passionate 10-day affair, they end their romance so that Neda can go to Moscow to continue her education. The parting is painful, but the lovers are willing to sacrifice their personal happiness for a meaningful contribution to a future society . Now middle-aged and married to others, they discover their passion rekindled but fear that a scandal will develop if their friends see them together. By the time Neda accompanies Boyan to the airport, his views are so changed that he offers to forego an important meeting in Vienna if Neda will go away with him. Neda, however, sensing the futility of it all, leaves the airport, and Boyan boards the plane alone.
