Synopsis
A trilogy of episodes illustrate the consequences of war. THE DESERTER concerns Kálmán, a gypsy who deserts the army during World War I and returns to his wife, Lila. At a wedding, Kálmán disquises himself as a gypsy bride but is recognized by Smrt, a White Russian Hussar who pursues and kills him. Meanwhile, another deserter in the village incites a riot directed against two wealthy landowners; the Hussars are called in and ruthlessly quash the revolt. SUNDAY deals with the commander of a patrol of Russian partisans who set up quarters in a farmhouse at the close of World War II. An itinerant egg seller comes to the farmhouse, and the Russians accuse him of being a German spy and execute him. News arrives of the end of the war, but a German patrol attacks the village, engaging the Russians in a bloody battle. THE NOMADS takes place in a futuristic world after World War III. In an underground cell, a group of elderly people persecute a man whom they believe represents death. Nevesta, a young woman, takes pity on him, and together they leave the shelter to search for survivors of the nuclear holocaust. When they find no signs of life, both the man and Nevesta die.
