Synopsis
When police commissioner Hansen orders that all horses used on the police force are to be retired and sold at auction, Jack Franklin, who patrols the city park, is outraged. Jack then saves Hansen's daughter Ellen from her runaway horse while riding his own horse, "Starlight," who belongs to the city. Jack is late for the auction, but Ellen buys Starlight and gives him back to Jack as payment for saving her life. After the auction, the local bank is robbed and, although Jack stops one robber named Butch, Jack's friend, Snowflake, the bank's porter, dies from Butch's bullet. The robbers are led by Jack's younger brother Dave, whom they broke out of reform school, to hide out in Jack's desert cabin. Jack, who has since retired from police work, arrives at his cabin and is propositioned by the robbers to join forces with them. Jack hides his identity from them until Hymie, who used to tend the police department's horses, arrives on foot with six horses and unwittingly exposes Jack's former occupation. A gunfight breaks out and Dave is shot near the heart. Jack escapes on Starlight to find a doctor, but one of the men catches up with him in a car. Jack sends Starlight into town alone, hoping that the law of the desert regarding a riderless horse will send a posse after him immediately. Jack is brought back to the cabin, where he finds Dave dead, and is then tied up with Hymie before the robbers set the cabin on fire and escape on one horse toward the local dam. Ellen, meanwhile, has seen Starlight on the road and arrives at the hideout with her dog, "Braveheart." Together, they save Jack and Hymie and remove Dave's body from the fire. Starlight, meanwhile, has alerted the sheriff and his posse and has returned to the hideout. Jack mounts Starlight and chases the robbers, while Ellen takes her car to intercept the posse. One of the robbers then throws his partner off the horse and tramples him. Jack intercepts the robber at the dam, but is knocked out and left for dead as he prepares to dynamite the dam. Braveheart and Starlight find Jack, and Braveheart wakes him moments before the dam explodes and water floods the valley. As the posse arrives, Braveheart attacks the robber, who then falls over a cliff. Later, a newly wed Ellen and Jack drive out of the desert, while Hymie, seated on Starlight in a horse trailer, reads a book on how to become a G-man.
