Synopsis
At the Lucky Bros. Mine, shipments of mercury, also known as "quicksilver," which was used in the separation of gold from ore, have recently been stolen. Sheriff Keith Ames is called to the mine to investigate and there meets his sweetheart, Trudy Clark, her uncle Lester, and the mine's owner, Nugget Clark. Later, henchmen enter the mine, steal the mine's payroll money, and shoot Les, after which Nugget tells Keith just as he is asking Trudy to elope. At the Panamint Wells National Bank, Nugget asks Vinson McKnight for a loan and offers the Lucky Bros. Mine as collateral. McKnight, who is secretly working with the outlaws, agrees to back the loan. McKnight learns that Allan "Rocky" Lane will guard the next shipment, and after he informs his henchmen, one of them, Tony Richards, explains that his brother Snake was once arrested by Rocky and has a vendetta against him. They then write a letter to Snake, asking him to come to town and impersonate Rocky, but on his way into town, Snake attacks Rocky, who is forced to kill Snake in self-defense. In Snake's pocket, Rocky finds the letter revealing McKnight's plan, so Rocky decides to impersonate Snake in order to catch the criminals. In town, Keith and Trudy advise Rocky to take a job at Nugget's mine, which he does. The next morning, Rocky and Nugget go to the bank, where the henchmen mistake Rocky for Snake. Later, Rocky finds a note from the gang which is addressed to Snake. When Keith and Rocky see Nugget's wagon ambushed by the bandits, they come to the rescue. Nugget recovers from a fall onto some rocks, and goes to the mine to pay his miners their salary, using the loan money. Nugget explains his financial situation and the workers agree to work double time to mine the quicksilver. Meanwhile, McKnight thinks that Snake has turned on him, and is packing to leave when Shad Booth and his men arrive. When Tony sees Rocky, he realizes that Rocky has been impersonating Snake. Rocky suggests they take a back road to fool them bandits, and suggests leaving flags to mark their way across the desert. At the same time, Rocky suggests that he and Keith act as decoys on the main road. Later, Tony tells Keith that he thinks Rocky is the bandit, but when Trudy hears, she explains the plan that Rocky has suggested. When Rocky arrives, Keith arrests him, and their suspicions are confirmed when they find the letters written to Snake in Rocky's possession. Rocky learns that Tony has been tipped off, so he escapes from jail in order to warn Nugget. The gang chases Rocky, who rides Black Jack and jumps aboard Nugget's moving wagon. When Keith and the posse arrive, the bandits scatter and Keith again arrests Rocky. Later, Nugget takes the quicksilver to McKnight. He explains that a buyer will be arriving in town the next day, and asks that the quicksilver be placed inside the vault. The gang ties Keith up and places him in the jail while kidnapping Rocky from jail. Rocky is able to escape and returns to the jail. After Keith arrests Shad and Vinson, Rocky says good-bye to Nugget and Trudy.
