Synopsis
Anita, a young unmarried mother, works as a waitress in a small Swedish coastal community near Malmö, where she lives with her daughter Helena and her overprotective brother Raymond. One day a cargo vessel, the Elsa, anchors nearby for a weekend, and Anita recognizes John, its captain, as a man who insulted her while drunk two years before. He asks her for a date that evening, but she suggests the following night, when she can get a babysitter for her daughter. In the early morning, they meet while swimming, drink coffee together, and decide to take Helena for a day's outing in Copenhagen, where all three enjoy a pleasant afternoon at the zoo. That evening, after Helena has gone to sleep and Raymond has left for a party, John and Anita have supper in her cottage. Although mutually attracted, they are wary and apprehensive because both have been hurt before. Eventually, after a brief misunderstanding, they make love and spend an ecstatic night together. In the morning, John returns to his boat and departs, leading Anita to believe he was only philandering. John is serious, however, and he returns with a gift for her. Discovering that Anita has left the village for a holiday, John telephones her to propose marriage and she accepts.
