Synopsis
The Marquis de Sade escapes from an insane asylum where he has been confined for committing unnatural sex acts and for his opposition to the French royalty. The marquis takes refuge in the ruined mansion where he was reared, and there he meets his uncle, the Abbé de Sade, who forces the marquis to remember his past life. The abbé has the marquis beaten by a young maidservant until the young man is unable to distinguish between pleasure and pain. Eventually, the marquis develops sexual proclivities for flagellation and orgies. He is sent to prison to correct his behavior, but he reacts by writing bitter attacks on the government. Upon his release, he is forced to wed the unattractive Renée de Montreuil. The marquis finally consents to the marriage because he has fallen in love with Anne de Montreuil, the sister of his fiancée. De Sade continues his debaucheries in brothels, pursued by the police. He attempts to elope with Anne, but she dies of the plague. De Sade then leaves his uncle, who has evidently enjoyed inflicting pain on his nephew.
