Synopsis

In the 1880s, after a long, hard cattle drive along the Chisholm Trail, cattlemen Sunset Carson and Banty McCabe go to the saloon at Trail's End. There, Banty is disturbed to see Jim Owens, a young rancher they met on the trail, become embroiled in a poker game with two cardsharps, Ace Diamond and Bill Klinker. Sunset joins the game and wins all of Jim's money, which he intends to return to Jim the next morning after the young man sobers up. Diamond and Klinker fuel Jim's anger, however, by telling him that Sunset cheated him. They give Jim a gun, and when Jim draws on Sunset and takes his money belt, Sunset is forced to shoot at him in self-defense. At the same time, Diamond, who is hiding in the shadows with Klinker, shoots Jim in the back, and Klinker retrieves his gun and Sunset's money belt. Sunset, unsure whether his bullet killed Jim, escapes from the sheriff with Banty's aid, and then travels to Denton, the town near the ranch belonging to Jim and his sister Molly. Sunset hopes to explain Jim's death to Molly and help her out, but unknown to Sunset, Diamond and Klinker also travel to Denton after discovering an assay report on a rich gold mine among Jim's papers. Knowing that they must somehow gain control of the Owens ranch before Molly learns that Jim found gold there, Diamond and Klinker approach banker Jacob Lewis. They quickly discover that Lewis has forged notes of debt, which he has presented to grieving family members after the deaths of the heads of the household, and threaten to expose him if he does not help them. Lewis then reluctantly tells Molly that she must pay off the entire debt allegedly left by her late father, and she decides to round up her herd of horses and sell them to save the ranch. Determined to thwart her plans, Diamond and Klinker bring in some of their henchmen, whose attacks prompt Molly's cowboys to quit. Using the name Sunset Carter, Sunset organizes the men and they return to Molly's ranch, where they soon have the horses ready for market. Klinker has spotted and recognized Sunset, however, and alerts the sheriff to his presence. Molly is furious upon learning that Sunset is her brother's accused killer and tries to shoot him herself, but he escapes with only a slight wound. After eluding the posse, Sunset returns to the ranch to explain Jim's death to Molly, and when she tells him that Jim never carried a gun, Sunset realizes that someone engineered Jim's death. Sunset leaves and is chased by Klinker but, with Banty's aid, succeeds in capturing him. Klinker alludes to the fact that Sunset has been framed for killing Jim, then passes out. Sunset discovers that Klinker is wearing his money belt, and upon inspecting it, finds a bullet that must have come from his own gun. Realizing that the bullet must have been the one he fired at Jim, who was holding the belt in his hand when he was killed, Sunset knows that he is innocent of Jim's murder. In town, Diamond overhears Banty tell the sheriff that Klinker is about to clear Sunset, and goes to Sunset's cave hideout to kill Klinker before he can talk. As Banty brings the sheriff, Sunset arrives with Molly, to whom he wants to prove his innocence. A fierce fight ensues, during which Molly prevents Klinker from escaping, Banty and the sheriff capture Lewis, and Sunset bests Diamond in a fistfight. After the dust settles, Molly apologizes to Sunset and embraces him.
