The Day the Fish Came Out

1h 49m 1967

Brief Synopsis

A cautionary tale. A plane carrying a weapon more dangerous than a nuclear weapon goes down near Greece. To prevent panic, the officials go in dressed as tourists (who are dressed so casually that the pilots assume that they are all gay). The pilots are not to make themselves known and can't contact the rescue team. The secrecy causes a comedy of errors including the desolate Greek Isle deciding that since tourists have now arrived, they have to become touristy.

Synopsis

In the year 1972, a bomber of an unnamed world power develops engine trouble while flying over the Aegean Sea. The pilot and navigator bail out after disposing of their cargo--two atom bombs and a mysterious metal box. Clad only in their undershorts, the two men wade ashore to the barren island of Karos. To recover the cargo without causing widespread panic, the government of the world power disguises some 20 soldiers, led by Elias, as hotel experts and sends them to Karos under the pretext of studying the island's tourist possibilities. They soon recover the two bombs, but they are unable to locate the metal box, which has already been found by a goatherd who has been unable to open it. As word spreads that Karos is the new status resort, the island quickly fills with tourists, much to the dismay of Elias and the consternation of the two crewmen, who are unaware of the true identity of the hotel experts. Among the influx is Electra, a beautiful American archeologist who flirts with Peter, one of the disguised military men. While they are having a drink, the goatherd steals a powerful acid that Electra uses in her work, and he succeeds in opening the metal box. Disappointed at finding only brown stones, he tosses the box into the sea, and his wife throws a couple of the seemingly worthless objects into the town's water reservoir. Meanwhile, the two pilots, after becoming separated, are reunited and overjoyed because one of them has begged enough money to telephone a report to their headquarters. As they join the tourists wildly dancing on the beach, they notice the countless bodies of dead fish floating to the surface near the harbor.
