Synopsis
Criminologist Brett Kingsford, who poses as a wealthy playboy to disguise his identity as a detective, is called upon by police to solve a series of related murders in turn-of-the-century San Francisco. The victims were found clawed, a small Oriental statue beside each corpse. Kingsford learns from Chi Zang, an old Chinese, that an ancient demon spirit, represented by the statue, chooses a living person to possess and carry out its evil deeds; but before it can enter the body, it must murder seven times. Kingsford visits his friend Robert Vandenburg, who is engaged to marry Evelyn Lang. Robert appears ill-at-ease and, at the mention of the killings, loses consciousness. Kingsford then learns from Professor Malaki, a fortune-teller, that Robert had a twin brother from whom he was separated at birth. Both the doctor and nurse who were present at their births were among the recent victims, and Kingford concludes that the evil brother, who is deformed, desires to take over his brother's body and is killing all those who could verify Robert's existence. In the belief that the next murder will take place at the wedding, Kingsford arrives in time to save Evelyn from being murdered by the already-possessed Robert.
