Synopsis

After stranded show girl Jenny is struck unconscious by a speeding car while hitchhiking to New York, she awakens in a strange mansion. Jenny soon learns that the house belongs to Max Ducane, the man whose car hit her. Ducane, a collector of ancient ceramics, insists that Jenny remain in his home until she recuperates and introduces her to his wife Millicent and his young stepdaughter Jackie. Although Ducane and his family are friendly toward her, Jenny senses trouble when she hears Millicent scream during the night. Jackie explains that her mother has been suffering a mysterious long-term illness, for which Ducane has been giving her nightly glasses of milk, but Jenny is still uncertain. Soon after, however, Ducane's brother-in-law Curtis, a test pilot, arrives at the estate and allays Jenny's fears. Jenny's suspicions are again aroused when Ducane, who takes on a mad look whenever he pours over his antiques, mutters something about throwing someone down the stairs. Later, Jenny learns that Millicent inherited her wealth from her aunt, who fell down a set of stairs. After Millicent then dies, Jenny becomes convinced that Ducane is a killer, but Curtis, with whom she has fallen in love, insists that Ducane is innocent and angrily asks her to leave. Before she departs, Foster, Ducane's elderly assistant, informs Jenny that Ducane is insane and bent on obtaining Millicent's fortune so that he can add to his ceramics collection. Jenny investigates further, visiting Millicent's lawyer, and learns that Jackie, not Ducane, is to inherit her mother's wealth. Assuming that Jackie will be Ducane's next victim, Jenny rushes back to the estate to save her. Ducane, meanwhile, has discovered that Foster spoke to Jenny and murders him. Ducane then sets a trap for Jenny, luring her to a deserted road and knocking her out. After he puts her unconscious body in a car with Foster's corpse, he sets fire to the car. Curtis, who has been conducting his own investigation and found Jenny's assertions to be accurate, returns to the estate in time to rescue Jenny. Ducane dies when his car overturns while trying to flee from Curtis.
