Synopsis

When one of the Maxwell Company's armored cars disappears with a gold shipment, the missing driver, Bob Hill, is suspected of theft. Actually, Maxwell and his henchmen had poured acid on the truck's brake lines, causing the vehicle to crash into a mountain lake. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are called in to investigate the disappearance, causing the Inspector's daughter Genevieve, an amatuer sleuth, to theorize that Maxwell and Hatch, the bank president, are involved in the crime. When Renfrew discovers a trail of clues leading to Maxwell, he and Corporal are tricked into driving one of the trucks, and it meets the same fate as the first vehicle. Thanks to Renfrew's quick reflexes, he saves the runaway truck by swerving it into a mountainside, and then realizes that Hill must also have been sabotaged. The next day, he and Kelly dive into the lake where they find the missing truck and the driver's body. They also find that the gold shipment is fake, and discover a box of candy addressed to Maxwell's girlfriend. Upon learning that there is no such person, Renfrew reasons that under the pretense of giving the candy to the driver to deliver, Maxwell tricked him into returning to the garage, where he switched the gold shipments. As Renfrew appears at the garage to arrest Maxwell, Maxwell and his men speed away in an armored truck, and when the air brake collapses, the gang meets the same fate of the first driver. Renfrew then discovers that Genevieve has locked Hatch in a vault, believing him to be working with the gang. After releasing Hatch, Renfrew makes Genevieve promise never to play detective again.
