Synopsis
An exposé of the Duke of Orgagna, the ruthless dictator of a small Balkan country, is being compiled by crusading American journalist Richard Ashley. The story will be the biggest in his career, and he needs only certain photostats to document his evidence before releasing the exposé. As he is awaiting the photostats in a cafe, the contact man informs him that the price for them has been raised from $5,000 to $10,000. The enraged Ashley threatens the man and is on the verge of violence when the appearance of Cosima, Orgagna's wife, calms him. Years before, Cosima and Ashley had been lovers, but she rejected him to marry Orgagna. After reminiscing a bit, Ashley and Cosima go for a drive in the country, during the course of which the body of a man falls in the car's path. Upon examining the body, Ashley discovers it is that of the contact man who was to deliver the photostats to him. Ashley takes the corpse to the police and is allowed his freedom on the condition that he remain in the country. Later, after further questioning, he is placed in the Duke of Orgagna's custody at the duke's island villa in order to avoid an international incident. Despite Orgagna's pleas, Ashley tells him he plans to print the exposé. It is revealed that the photostats are in the possession of Elena, Orgagna's mistress, who is the sister of the man who planned to sell them to Ashley. Elena gives Ashley the photostats when she learns that Orgagna killed her brother. The desperate Orgagna attempts to poison Ashley and obtain the photostats, but Elena's father, having learned that his daughter is Orgagna's mistress, fatally stabs the duke. Orgagna's death makes Ashley's exposé unnecessary, and he and Cosima are happily reunited.
