Synopsis

In 17th century England, King Charles I and his Royalist followers go into hiding after Charles' defeat at Naseby. Colonel Judd, a ruthless Cromwell disciple, ferrets out the Royalists and takes over the castle of one of his victims; but he is unaware that his daughter, Clare, who joins him at the castle, is a Royalist, and that Sylvester, his aide, loves Clare and has also joined the Royalists. Sylvester learns that Clare and Edward Beverley, the Royalist leader known as "The Scarlet Blade," are in love, and he threatens to betray them. Edward is captured. Judd, learning of Sylvester's Royalist activities, arrests him, but Sylvester counters by revealing Clare's Royalist involvement. Judd kills Sylvester, and Clare and Edward escape together and hide at a gypsy camp. Judd locates them but feigns ignorance of their hiding place and, rather than expose them, orders his troops to depart.
