Synopsis

In San Francisco, Henry, an iconoclastic exterminator, marries Lorabelle, a frivolous romantic. After Lorabelle suffers a miscarriage, for which she blames Henry, she embarks on numerous affairs, including disappointing liaisons with an actor, a fisherman, an Italian voice instructor, and an elderly liar. Indifferent to her comings and goings, Henry combats his ennui by drinking and sleeping. Eventually, Lorabelle settles down and conceives a daughter. During adolescence, the daughter elopes with a motorcyclist, leaving Henry and Lorabelle to their own limited resources.
