Synopsis

As the Germans retreat northward out of Greece in 1945, the city of Athens is contested by rival political factions, and British Maj. Peter Whitfield finds himself commanding the defense of the Hotel Zeus in the middle of the besieged city. The hotel is surrounded by Greek rebels led by Mavroti, and trapped inside are Captain Elliot, a British officer; several Greek loyalists; two American soldiers, Captain Stubbs and Private Feinberg; and hotel owner Janny Mendoris and his daughter Lelia. Whitfield learns from Mendoris that the hotel contains a large cache of weapons desperately needed by the rebel fighters, and he determines to withstand the rebels' repeated attacks. Captain Stubbs is at first reluctant to join in the defense, but the heat of battle finally diverts him from his romantic pursuit of both Lelia and Doushka, a fiery refugee. With the help of Stubbs, Whitfield successfully defends the hotel until movements in the enemy camp indicate that a traitor is aiding the Greeks from within the hotel. Stubbs disappears, and Whitfield assumes that he has gone over to the rebels. After making plans to blow up the hotel and the cache of arms when his people are free, Whitfield goes to negotiate with the rebels. There he finds that the rebels have tortured Stubbs into revealing where the arms are located, and Whitfield realizes that the traitor is still in the hotel. Under the guise of defeat, Whitfield returns to the hotel and agrees to vacate his remaining forces. He discovers that Captain Elliot is the traitor, and after a gunfight in the hotel basement, Whitfield manages to set off an explosion which rips through the basement fortress and destroys Elliot and the munitions. Whitfield and the remaining patriots escape to join the British.
