Synopsis
During the Algerian War of 1961, Captain Le Blanc of the French Foreign Legion receives orders to capture the leader of the resistance movement, Ben Bled, and bring him to French headquarters. Le Blanc and 12 of his legionnaires carry out their mission and take their prisoner to a rendezvous spot where a helicopter is waiting to take them to safety. But the helicopter is shot down, and the party, which now includes a French prostitute named Nora and an Arab boy, is forced to make a long and dangerous trek through partisan territory. They hide in an abandoned church, and Le Blanc's men are forced to fight for a cause they already know to be lost. The battle is long and bloody, and one by one the legionnaires are killed. Le Blanc and the remnants of his once proud force arrive with their prisoner at headquarters, and learn that all the fighting and dying has been in vain: the political situation has changed and Ben Bled is now an important figure who will help negotiate a peace treaty. Bitter and confused, Le Blanc considers killing his prisoner. But he changes his mind and is left to wonder about the lives he sacrificed in carrying out his orders.
