Synopsis
At the Frontier Saloon, a gunslinger named Shamrock meets Lucky and the Colonel, a pair of cardsharps. When rangers are heard approaching, Shamrock, Lucky and the Colonel flee, and after riding all night, they arrive at a homestead outside of Cactus Junction, where they meet a young woman named Ann. Later, in the Cactus Junction sheriff's office, Lucky and the Colonel show up for a meeting, having been summoned by landowner Jim Morgan. After Shamrock joins them, the sheriff gives the three men badges and tells them they will each receive $1,000 when they have run off the last of the homesteaders. Meanwhile, at Ann's house, her friend the Deacon tells her that because of Morgan, the homesteaders' survey was rejected, leaving them unable to file a claim for the land on which they have been living. Back in Cactus Junction, Shamrock, Lucky and the Colonel are having a drink at the saloon when Loco Joe and his gang of outlaws enter. A fight soon breaks out, and Shamrock uses his authority as a deputy to take Joe and his men to the sheriff. He then rides out to Ann's home, where he finds her caring for a baby boy. After the Deacon summons Ann to an emergency meeting, she leaves the infant in the flustered Shamrock's care. When Lucky and the Colonel ride by and see Shamrock's horse outside of Ann's house, they go inside and help him with the baby. Meanwhile, Ann is about to leave the homesteaders' meeting when a man comes in to report that three professional gunmen have come to town, and she races home in a panic. Back in town, Morgan tells Joe that the three deputies he brought in to deal with the homesteaders are gone, and asks if Joe and his men will take their place. Joe agrees to work for double the original price, then forces Morgan to write down the combination to his safe and locks him and the sheriff in a cell. When Ann gets home, she disarms the deputies and forces them into her hidden cellar, but before she can fetch the homesteaders, Joe and his gang arrive. While Joe and two of his men are admiring the baby, Ann locks them in the bedroom, then gives Shamrock, Lucky and the Colonel back their guns. Shamrock rides off to get the Deacon, but the homesteaders do not believe Shamrock's story and pursue him back to Ann's house. Meanwhile, Joe breaks out of the bedroom and tricks Lucky into leaving the cellar, whereupon he ambushes and wounds him. Shamrock returns to find Joe preparing to burn down the house, and subdues him just as the homesteaders arrive. They are about to seize Shamrock, despite Ann's protests, when Shamrock produces papers that identify him as a Colorado ranger. He explains that he had captured a criminal called The Shamrock Kid, who was carrying a letter from the sheriff asking him to do some dirty work, and he assumed the outlaw's identity in order to investigate the matter. The Colonel then enters with the injured Lucky, and they reveal, to each other's surprise, that they are also undercover Colorado rangers. Later, Shamrock asks Ann about her husband, and she explains that the baby belongs to her brother, who is out of town. After Shamrock declares that he might get himself reassigned to her territory, he and Ann kiss.
