Synopsis

When modern cattle rustlers, using high-powered trucks and machine guns, threaten the livelihoods of the ranchers, Magpie and his partner Joan send for Lightning Bill Carson. After refusing to help, Bill changes his mind when Blackton, whom he suspects is in league with the rustlers, wins a government packing contract on which Bill had bid. Disguised as a Mexican named Miguel, Bill shows up at Magpie's ranch to investigate. Learning that Thurston and his men are rustling cattle to supply Blackton's contracts, Bill, still posing as Miguel, proceeds to hijack several of the rancher's trucks, thus forcing Thurston to make a deal with him. When Magpie discovers Miguel's true identity, Bill convenes a meeting at Joan's ranch, where he meets Bob Swane, a cattle detective. Bill delegates Bob to watch Thurston's headquarters, but on his way to town, Bob is kidnapped by James, one of Thurston's men. That night, as Miguel, Bill thwarts an attack on Magpie's ranch, and after driving the rustlers away, Bill enters the ranch house to congratulate Magpie and the ranchers on their good work. Overhearing the conversation, James learns that Miguel is really Bill and rides to the rustlers' headquarters with the news. Upon his return, Bill finds that James has been accused of informing the ranchers of the attack. When the outlaws insist that Bill pass judgment on James, Bill senses that his cover has been exposed, and escapes with Bob. Blackton, enraged at Thurston's incompetence, takes control of the operation himself. The following day, the ranchers set a trap for the rustlers. Unaware of this, Blackton builds a barricade to ambush the cattle trucks, but as the ranchers drive through the barricade, the sheriff appears to arrest Blackton and his men. With the rustlers brought to justice, Bill returns to the city, while Bob settles down with Joan.
