Synopsis

On New Year's Eve 1941, test pilot Aleksey Astakhov because of a misunderstanding attends a party at the home of the Lvovs to which he has not been invited. When the mistake becomes clear, he leaves, and though Sasha Lvova recognizes him and wants him to return, it is too late. When the city is evacuated, Sasha remains behind to work at a factory. During an air raid, Aleksey and Sasha meet again, and in the few free evenings they spend together, they fall in love. A short time later, Sasha hears a radio report that Aleksey has been lost in action; and posthumously he is made a Hero of the Soviet Union. Sasha gives birth to their son and continues to hope that Aleksey is alive. Finally, with the end of the war, Aleksey returns from a German prison camp scarred and prematurely aged. In the post-war years, under Stalin's leadership, Aleksey's wartime surrender to the Germans creates suspicion of disloyalty. His Party membership is revoked and he is prevented from working as a pilot. Aleksey loses hope and begins drinking heavily, but Sasha maintains her faith in him and attempts to encourage him to look toward the future. After Stalin's death, Aleksey's case is reviewed and all of his honors are restored. Once again Aleksey's test plane flies through the skies.
