Traveling actors Bob Carlton and Genevieve learn that their fellow trouper, Harrison, checked out of their hotel, taking all their money and leaving the bills unpaid. Stranded, Genevieve takes a job as a hotel waitress, while Bob, a former cowpuncher, comes to the defense of an old rancher, Patrick, who is being harassed on the street by greedy Flash Corbin, to whom O'Brien owes money. Dan Fanning, a friend of O'Brien, offers to pay Bob to work for the proud rancher, whose Lost River Ranch is failing due to a lack of water. On Dan's orders, young Orphant McGuire leads Bob to the ranch, where he signs on for no pay on the pretext of wanting to learn the business. However, over the next week Bob becomes more acquainted with O'Brien's granddaughter Patsy than with ranching. One day, two of Corbin's men ride onto O'Brien's land and pour something into his river, and although Bob is unable to capture them, he does find empty cartons of poison, so he moves the cattle to a safe place. Later, while chasing a stray cow, Orphant hears a strange noise, and Bob realizes it is an underground river. Hank, Corbin's henchman, overhears Bob inform Dan about his discovery and Dan's explanation that an Artesian well is as valuable as a gold mine. After Hank interrupts an embrace between Corbin and Genevieve to inform him about the newfound water source, Corbin orders him to attack Matthews, a well digger hired by Dan. With Matthews out of the way, Corbin sends Ed Brady, the only other well boss in the area, to O'Brien's ranch. Ed claims that the drill bit is broken and shuts down the operation, but his subordinates suspect him, and Patsy persuades them to continue in Ed's absence. Ed warns Corbin he must obtain the ranch before the well is completed. To trick O'Brien into selling, Corbin has Genevieve impersonate a woman from the East, who is eager to buy the ranch because of health problems. Meanwhile Orphant alerts Bob about the drilling, and Bob sends him for the sheriff. By the time Patsy brings him news of the well's success, however, O'Brien has already sold the ranch. Hank, Ed and Corbin begin a fistfight with O'Brien and Bob, which is finally settled upon the sheriff's arrival. After Bob prevents Corbin's escape, Corbin shoots at the dynamite connected to the drilling, causing water to rush out of the ground in a waterspout. Genevieve's bill of sale is then torn up as Orphant and O'Brien watch Bob and Patsy kiss.
