Synopsis

Sharpshooter Eddie Dean returns to the town of Red Gap, Colorado and learns that the town is ruled by a gang of outlaws led by saloon owner Brad Taggart. Taggart's control of the town extends to Judge Hammond, who acquitted gang member Slim after he killed Eddie's friend, Jack Jordan, in an attempt to take over Jordan's Lazy-J Ranch. Although the Lazy-J was left to Jordon's young daughter Cathy, it is being run by Taggart and his partner, Farrell. When a gunfight starts outside the barbershop owned by deputy sheriff Soapy Jones, Sheriff Clark is killed. Eddie disarms the gang members, and Soapy arrests them, then makes Eddie sheriff. When Ace Bannion defies Red Gap law by refusing to check his guns at the sheriff's office, Eddie disarms and fights him in the saloon, then jails him for Clark's murder. Although Taggart hires two unknown gunslingers to kill Eddie, he kills them both. Meanwhile, Judge Hammond returns to town and holds an inquest on Clark's death. Ace pleads self-defense, and although Cathy swears she saw Ace murder Clark, Taggart backs Ace's testimony, and Hammond acquits Ace. Eddie takes off his badge and intimidates Hammond into leaving town permanently. Cathy then sends for Judge Walsh, an old friend of her father, to take Hammond's place, and he is appointed by the governor. When Taggart's gang raids another ranch, and Ace kills Bud Edwards, the owner, Eddie tries to capture Ace and the gang in a gunfight in the saloon, but they escape. Judge Walsh then orders Ace's arrest and Eddie goes after the gang. Believing Hammond is still the town judge, Slim surrenders after Eddie promises he will receive a fair trial. Meanwhile, Taggart and Farrell lock up Soapy and Walsh in the sheriff's office. When Eddie arrives with Slim and Ace under arrest, Taggart and Farrell hold up Eddie, but he escapes, and Farrell offers his men $5,000 for Eddie's capture. Soapy and Walsh are freed, and with the help of a posse and Eddie, they apprehend the gang, but Taggart and Farrell elude them. Eddie returns alone to the saloon to arrest Taggart and Farrell, and Farrell meets him in the street for a showdown. Using a metal plate, Taggart reflects sunlight into Eddie's eyes just as Farrell is about to shoot, but Eddie skillfully shoots them both. Later, Eddie says good-bye to Cathy and asks Walsh to take care of her. After promising to return, Eddie rides off with Soapy.
